The firm was founded in approximately 1830 by John Blaker who also became Town Clerk of Lewes Borough Council as it was then. The firm has occupied the same premises since then and still has a number of client families and businesses which date back into the last century. The firm has always been a small one and has offered a quality service at a competitive price with the emphasis on a professional approach and the personal touch.
The firm has historically been strong in conveyancing and family work. We also act for a number of small and medium commercial enterprises, some of whom have been with us for over 50 years. Our probate files go back to the 19th century. We have a long line of private client families, some going back four generations
Partners and staff have always been closely involved in the community, serving on local charitable bodies, joining local groups such as Round Table and Rotary, charities, school governorship and involving themselves in sports clubs. Support staff who live in Lewes are or have been involved in activities particular to this part of the world, for example stoolball and the famous Lewes Bonfire Societies.
Many of our older clients like us to preserve the traditional image of the building and the practice whilst our commercial clients expect to see modern, efficient methods. We aim to blend these sometimes conflicting expectations to provide a service which is both personal and accessible but up-to-date and effective. We believe there is a market for our mix of personal, expert service at a competitive price.
